The integration of a large number of decentralized renewable energy generators in the distribution network was not something that could have been predicted at the time the network was developed and built. So far, the networks have handled the rapid and enormous expansion. However, the limits of stable network operation have been reached in many areas. The result is capacity bottlenecks in cables and transformers and voltage spikes in the network. One response to these challenges is the ABB's smart Compact Secondary Substation (CSS).
As various sources of renewable power generation are introduced, the medium-voltage (MV) distribution network must adapt to maintain high quality of supply through new network concepts and automated solutions. Dividing distribution networks into zones – separated by active and intelligent components – provides a way to handle fault situations in an optimal way. Communication is a central part of the zoning concept, as it is essential to know the status of the zone divider equipment and to control it. In a zoned distribution network, the CSS with its built in technology becomes a key node, and act as a 'smart' CSS.
In distribution networks affected by the introduction of renewable power generation along with a variety of critical load types, securing quality of supply requires new levels of automation. Smart CSS, with fully integrated RMU solutions, can be placed at key points in the network to monitor critical components and key network parameters. ABB Prefabricated Substations have the facility to be monitored, controlled or even have complete network management in order to offer full reliability to power providers.
