Energy Efficiency Act, Canada

Federal Regulations in Canada are effective since 1997 and were revised 1999 and 2012. The 2012 revised efficiency legislation is similar to EISA 2007, it became valid 12.04.2012. Motors must be qualified by NRCan, a regulatory body. Regulations apply to motors that are imported into Canada or transported across provincial/territorial borders for the purpose of sale or lease. All motors regardless of the output power and speed combination destined to Canada must bear a Safety certificate marking, such as CSA. In addition, motors subject to energy efficiency requlation must be approved and certified.

Energy efficient compulsory for 201 - 500 HP, 2, 4, 6 pole and 1 - 500 HP, footless as well as 8 pole motors (150 - 373 kW) & Premium efficiency for 1 - 200 HP, 2, 4 & 6 pole motors (0,75 - 149 kW),

Premium efficiency identical to IE3, covers the following motors:
  • 1 - 200 HP (0,75 - 149 kW) 2 - 6 poles, up to 600 V, 60 Hz
  • Single speed, polyphase T frame motors

How to mark the motors?
Rating plate must show NEMA nominal efficiency at 100% load and a Safety certificate marking, such as CSA. Motors subject to energy efficiency requirements must have the EEV marking on the rating plate.

  • Inverter duty motors
  • Multi speed motors
  • P flange (high thrust bearing) and hollow shaft vertical pump motors
  • Flange mounted motors other than C and D flange types
  • NEMA/EEMAC JM and JP close coupled pump motors
  • NEMA/EEMAC U-frame motors
  • NEMA/EEMAC frame 48 and 56 motors
  • IEC motors in frame size 80 and below
  • Special performance motors such as NEMA/EEMAC design C and D motors
  • Saw arbour motors
