EU MEPS

EU MEPS sets mandatory minimum efficiency levels for electric motors introduced into the European markets. The EU MEPS scheme covers most single speed, three phase induction motors up to 375 kW. It will come to effect in three stages from June 2011 onwards.

ABB has a full range of motors meeting EU MEPS requirements.

,What is EU MEPS?
,

As of June 16, 2011, motors placed on European market must meet the IE2 efficiency level. This applies to the following motors:
  • 0,75 - 375 kW, 2-6 pole motors, up to 1000 V 50 Hz
  • Motors capable of continuous duty operation
  • Efficiency measuring method acc. to IEC 60034-2-1:2007.
Timetable?
Stage 1 on June 16, 2011
  • Motors must meet the IE2 efficiency level
Stage 2 on January 1, 2015
  • Motors with rated output of 7,5 - 375 kW must meet either the IE3 efficiency level
or the IE2 level if fitted with a variable speed drive
Stage 3 on January 1, 2017
  • Motors with a rated output of 0,75 - 375 kW must meet either the IE3 efficiency level
or the IE2 level if fitted with a variable speed drive
How to mark the motors?
The IE class must be marked on the rating plate, but it is not necessary to register products.
.
What is excluded?
Today, for example the following motors are excluded from EU MEPS:
  • Motors wholly immersed in liquid
  • Motors completely integrated into a product
  • Motors designed to operate at altitudes >1000m
  • Motors designed to operate in ambient of > 40°C or > -15°C
  • Smoke extraction motors for temperatures > 400°C
  • Brake motors
  • Motors for explosive atmospheres
(ABB stamps IE-class also for Ex-motors acc. to IEC 60034-30)
