Rolls-Royce inspects and validates ABB manufacturing capability in Estonia

2012-04-13 - Over two days in February, Rolls-Royce staff visited and audited an ABB facility in Estonia. After the visit production began on seven AMG generators.

On 2–3 February 2012, ABB hosted representatives from Rolls-Royce at its electrical machine plant in the small borough of Jüri in northern Estonia.

A framework agreement signed in December 2011 calls for ABB to produce low- and high-voltage generators for marine and energy applications as well as induction motors for marine propulsion and thruster applications for Rolls-Royce. In January 2012, Rolls-Royce placed the first order for seven AMG generators.

Previously, ABB had a project-based arrangement with Rolls-Royce, primarily to produce LV motors. The business relationship has now expanded to include the manufacture of AMG generators in northern Estonia.

“The main reasons ABB was awarded the frame agreement were the company’s superior products, the high level of professional local support and excellent service,” says ABB Key Account Manager Tenho Eerola. “This deal was the result of a huge team effort; the professional work put in by the Rolls-Royce purchasing organization and our sales support team really helped speed up the process.”

ABB decided that the plant in Jüri was the best place to manufacture the generators due to its high capacity.
Rolls-Royce representatives were invited to visit the plant during which they inspected the factory, examined the manufacturing process and validated ABB’s manufacturing capability.Rolls-Royce had previously conducted an inspection of the ABB facility in Helsinki and plans to conduct similar audits of ABB factories in China and possibly Brazil in the near future.
