Substations to aid transmission of Himalayan hydropower, strengthen grid
Bangalore, July 1, 2009 – ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has won a Rs. 1654 million order from Power Transmission Corporation of Uttarakhand Ltd, for three substations to strengthen the northern Indian region's transmission grid and help deliver clean hydropower to communities in the area.
ABB will design, supply, install and commission the substations, rated at 132 kV (kilovolts), 220 kV and 400 kV respectively, as well as transformers and other major power equipment.
The substations are scheduled for completion in 2011, and will help meet growing demand for electricity with renewable power sources, supporting sustainable economic development in the region. The Srinagar substation in the western Himalayas will be one of the largest of its kind in the area.
“These substations will enhance the capacity and reliability of the northern grid and improve power quality by strengthening the transmission and distribution network of the region,” said Biplab Majumder, Vice Chairman and Managing Director, ABB India. “A stronger grid will play a crucial role in the economic development of the region by catering to the power requirements of the fast-growing industrial belts,” he added.
Substations are key installations in the transmission and distribution grid that facilitate the transformation of voltage levels and distribution of electrical power. ABB has a global installed base of over 10,000 substations, across a range of voltage levels up to 800 kV.
