ABB-GISPL recognized as ‘Great Place to Innovate’


ABB Global Industries and Services Private Limited (GISPL), the R&D arm, has received the award for “Great Place to Innovate” from Zinnov, a leading global research, consulting and advisory firm. The award was presented to at the Zinnov Confluence 2017, an annual thought leadership summit, in recognition of the efforts towards nurturing talent and innovation by creating workspaces for the future.

ABB-GISPL was chosen among 20 nominees from various sectors including telecom, engineering, information technology, software services and manufacturing with 2000 to 3000 technologists. This award acknowledges R&D arm of the global firms that are creating value for the organization. The jury evaluated the nominees on the basis of the organizational culture, initiatives towards innovation and the business impact of these initiatives.

“The award is a culmination of ABB’s R&D journey, which started in India more than a decade ago, to becoming the largest R&D presence for ABB globally. The center is the first-of-its-kind, which caters to innovation across the value chain from product concept, R&D, engineering and service, all under the same roof,” said GNV Subba Rao, head of ABB-GISPL.

It ranked highest in value creation to the business and innovation outcomes that reflected higher efficiency and talent management compared to other firms with relatively higher headcount.

“For an organization of their size, the thrust on innovation is significantly high. The outcomes exceed the success metrics expected. There are a lot of research-based activities that indicate a good focus towards R&D and creating an impact from the India center,” a member of the Jury wrote in his evaluation comments.

The jury also noted that various internal programs such as idea center, incubation lab, tech events and global leadership support provided a strong platform to the talent pool to build solutions on cutting-edge technologies that were productized and adopted by the organization. This inculcated a culture of innovation and ownership within all R&D teams.

“Businesses are embracing digitalization with the cloud at an unprecedented pace. The connected nature of the internet of things, services and people have also made innovation much more collaborative,” said Akilur Rahman, CTO, ABB India. “Hence a positive eco-system which encourages an open culture has become imperative to building future-ready industry solutions for India and countries around the world,” he added.

Over the years, the ABB-GISPL has built a conducive ecosystem encouraging everyone to work on latest technologies. The teams no longer work within closed compounds but are provided with opportunities for knowledge sharing across functions, sometimes in a start-up mode, to adopt a more partner-oriented and collaborative models.
